The Morning After

She was like something from out of a dream.  With hair like silk, intoxicating eyes, and a smile that could melt the ice in his drink. She was without doubt the most beautiful woman in the club that night.  As Ray and his brother joined their friends and were going through the formality of introductions, hers was the only name he heard, Angel.  He thought to himself it was as much a perfect description of her, as it was a beautiful name.

As she left to go dance with one of her girlfriends, Ray looked around to survey the selection of single woman available for his company. The club was popular with military servicemen so there were always plenty of women there. His brother had already found himself a companion and had left with her to share a drink.  But despite the abundance of ladies there was only one woman on Ray's mind at that moment. He summoned all of the confidence he could and decided to go find her and ask her for a dance.  The liquor in his system helped him overcome the fear of rejection he was sure he to receive from such a beautiful woman.  He found her as she was about to walk back onto the patio to sit with their group and asked her to dance; to his surprise she said yes, his heart soared as he led her to the dance floor.

She danced with the grace of a flower blowing in a gentle breeze.  But his delight was bittersweet, because of all the people on the dance floor that kept bumping her as they danced too close or knocked her out of the way to walk by.  Although she seemed unaffected but the constant barrage of people bumping in to her, he grew more irritated and the anger rose in him like magma rising to the surface; but her smile just calmed him like a cool ocean breeze. The club was full of women that night but Ray saw no other woman other than Angel. She was the most beautiful woman in the club that night and she was dancing with him.  Not grinding or sexing him up like many of the other woman in the club. She didn't wear a short skirt or a low cut dress.  She didn't have layers of make up or extravagant jewels. But she didn't need any, because she was already a precious gem.

She touched his soul with her smile and his very being with a simple look into eyes. After they danced, they sat together and talked for a while. She told him that she was a teacher, which was something that appealed to him because he liked the thought of working with kids. They talked about their own children and the sports and interests that the kids participated in. He found talking with her was pleasant because she was as interesting as she was beautiful.

As their evening ended he felt he had made a new friend. He looked forward to talking to her again, even if to just ask her how her day had been. That night he fell into a deep and satisfying sleep and dreamed of his Angel, of seeing her again and just spending time getting to know her.

The next morning Ray woke up feeling terribly sick. But this wasn’t a hangover.  It wasn’t the sick feeling you get when you wake up and realized that you left you phone or your wallet at the club.  It was even worse than the feeling of waking up with no memory of the night before; Ray remembered everything from the night before. He remembered the vision of loveliness that he had danced with. He remembered their friendly conversation. He remember how he almost melted every time he saw her smile.

But most of all…

He remembered that he had forgot to get her phone number.
